I then lubed all the moving parts (firing pins and the like with gun oil and action with grease). On Friday night I disassembled the shotgun and gave it a decent overall cleaning. More to follow as I continue to test my new Weatherby Orion Sporting over the coming days, weeks, months, and (with any luck) years. I suppose we’ll find out soon because I’ll be going out to pattern the new gun on Saturday and, hopefully, be busting clays with it on Sunday.

Thus far I’d say I’d have been willing to pay double what I did for what I got (but I haven’t shot it yet, so take that with a grain of salt, for now). If I had to sum up my feelings thus far I’d say I was very satisfied and pleasantly surprised.

It’s packed with features I could only really find on guns that cost at least twice what I paid ($825 plus taxes and fees). It mounts and swings nicely and feels good doing it. Some people say the forend looks pregnant, but I definitely like the way it fits my large hands and I don’t think it looks bad, either. I think it’s a beautiful gun, even without any ornate designs or silver finishes. Just about everything else, to be honest.

It’s nice that they included a full range of chokes, but the definitely don’t seem to be as well made or finished as the gun itself (more like an afterthought). Who really wants that on a sporting shotgun? My only real complaint is the bright green fiber optic front bead. The slight proudness of the stock to the receiver (and really, I’m just being picky here for the sake of complete transparency) and the fact that the included chokes say “no steel” on them (though for a sporting gun, this isn’t really an issue either). Really my only complaints are petty ones, thus far.

Safety, selective ejecting, barrel selection, and trigger all seem to function just fine. The action is a little stiff, but not overly so, and it is a brand new over/under, after all and I haven’t yet cleaned and reapplied grease yet, either. Thus far, everything seems to function perfectly. Once I got the shotgun home I began testing everything I could (except live firing, of course). Nice feeling recoil pad with a hard section on the top for snag-free mounting. Unfired shell will be extracted only.įiber optic front bead (not my preference but easy to fix if necessary). If only one barrel is fired, only that barrel will eject. Thumb safety (manual) and barrel selectorĪutomatic selective ejectors (only ejects if fired, otherwise extracts). The jeweling on the action is nice and, overall, it seems to be very well built.Ĭomes with 5 chokes and a choke case. Overall machining and general construction seems very high quality. The stock and forend are high gloss and seem very well made.įit and finish seems pretty darn good, though the stock and forend are a little proud where they meet the receiver (but not a lot), but they taper nicely and I don’t think it should be an issue in any way. It’s a great looking shotgun, even if less ornate than many of its competitors. I have to say, first, that my initial impression is primarily positive. Just picked up my brand new Weatherby Orion Sporting in 12 gauge with 30 inch ported barrels about an hour and a half ago.
